Quite the opposite.

The things that stand out to foreigners are often the things that have become so woven into everyday life that they are almost invisible to those who live among them: habits, expressions, social rituals, and ways of moving through the world that feel entirely natural when you’ve grown up with them.

After several years in Chilean Patagonia, there are still things I notice.

The way people greet one another is one of them.

Conversations rarely begin abruptly. There is often time for an exchange of pleasantries, a few questions, a brief catch-up before getting to the reason for the interaction. Even routine encounters can feel more personal, creating a different rhythm to the day.

Then there is family.

Of course, family matters everywhere. But I’ve often been struck by how present it is. References to parents, siblings, grandparents, cousins, and extended family appear naturally in discussions about work, plans, and daily life. Family feels less like a separate sphere and more like an ongoing presence.

Then there is the pace of small-town life.

Patagonia is hardly untouched by the pressures of modern life, but there remains a rhythm here that feels distinct. People stop to talk. Shopkeepers recognise their customers. Familiar faces appear repeatedly throughout the week. Community can feel both comforting and, occasionally, impossible to escape.

The relationship with nature is something I continue to notice as well.

Living in Patagonia means it is never entirely in the background. Weather shapes plans. Volcanoes sit quietly on the horizon. Rivers, forests, mountains, and lakes find their way into everyday conversation. Nature is not somewhere you go; it is simply there, woven into ordinary life.

Language offers some of the most interesting observations.

When I first arrived, I expected to learn Spanish. What I didn’t expect was that I would then have to learn Chilean Spanish, and in Patagonia, something more again.

Certain words seem to carry the history and character of a place within them. A baby isn’t always a bebé; more often, it’s a guagua (wah-wah). Someone might ask for a pichintún (pichintoon) rather than un poco — just a little. These words, inherited from Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche people, appear naturally in everyday conversation, woven into the Spanish spoken around me.

Then there are the diminutives. Everything seems capable of becoming a little smaller, softer, or more affectionate. A coffee becomes a cafecito. A moment becomes a momentito. Language stretches and contracts according to mood, relationship, and context.

And don’t get me started on the modismos.

Just when I think I’ve found my footing, someone introduces a new expression that leaves me wondering whether I’ve misunderstood the sentence entirely.

Entire conversations can seem to operate on a level of shared cultural understanding that takes years to absorb.

By now, I’ve learned my fair share of them. Using them naturally, however, is another matter entirely.

One of the unexpected things about living abroad is noticing what local people no longer see.
